Minister urges "more peacekeeping ops"

Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac assessed on Tuesday that members of the Serbian Army (VS) should take a more active part in UN peacekeeping operations. This, the minister said, should be done in cooperation with friendly countries. Minister urges "more peacekeeping ops" Opening a conference entitled “Security and the Society” Sutanovac said this is important "if we wish the Serbian Army to become an important foreign policy factor of our state, which would be recognized in the world". He added that presently, Serbia is taking part in three peacekeeping missions in Africa, all under UN mandate. Sutanovac said that Serbia's membership in NATO's Partnership for Peace program represents "a sufficient frame for cooperation with the alliance", pointing out, however, that "very soon Serbia will represent an isolated island surrounded by the countries that already joined NATO". Sutanovac said that the Serbian military has partnership relations with 44 countries, both NATO members, and countries that have not joined this alliance, as well as with Russia and China.
