Slovenia's ambassador to Belgrade says it is "realistic" that Serbia will attain EU candidate status by the end of the year. Miroslav Luci, whose country today took over the rotating EU presidency, told B92 that Slovenia wants to see Serbia join the Union. "Serbia EU candidate by end of 2008" "Slovenia has an interest, a desire for Serbia to enter the European Union as soon as possible, since Serbia inside the European community means stability." "Serbia is the key country in the Balkans and, incorporated in the EU, it will bring stability to this region, and the rest of Europe," Luci said. The ambassador added that Serbians "already feel European," while in his opinion, a large number of citizens, especially young people, wish for Serbia to join the EU as soon as possible.
