"Serbia makes irrational threats”

Svilanović told daily Dnevnik that the “Kosovo or European Union” dilemma does not exist.

“We can say what we want, but Serbia is surrounded by countries in the EU and NATO, so we do not have any other politicies but the ones that lead us towards Euro-Atlantic integrations,” Svilanović said.

He added that Serbia is asking for EU membership, not the other way around, and that trying to threaten that it will stop its integration is the wrong way to approach to Brussels on the Kosovo question.

Svilanović added that Serbia had this kind of political plan during the Milošević regime and that the results of that are evident now.

“After such politics of empty threats and attempts to blackmail the international community, we received bombs. We can try that again and we probably will not get bombs, but Serbia will stay lonely; an imprisoned island, not an island of freedom,” Svilanović said.

Yesterday, an editorial in the leading daily Politika and former Kosovo talks team coordinator Leon Kojen's interview to Novi Sad's Dnevnik voiced opinions that suggested Serbia should consider abandoning its EU ambition for the sake of retaining Kosovo within its boundaries.
