Rehn: UN resolution necessary

After talks with the UN Security Council mission, Rehn stressed that Kosovo was "an essentially European question," and that it represented "the biggest stake for Europe regarding security, stability, peace and freedom."

The European commissioner also stated that at the EU foreign ministers' meeting "the EU supported Martti Ahtisaari's plan," although at the previous two meetings, they had supported only "the process conducted by Ahtisaari," not his plan.

Since several EU members disagreed with Ahtisaari's proposal to define Kosovo's status as "supervised independence," the EU foreign ministers at the meetings held in Brussels in February, and in Bremen in March, did not support the contents of Ahtisaari's plan.

After talks with the UN Security Council ambassadors, Rehn also stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had underlined that he "shares European democratic values," and that it was "very important that the Russian approach to the Kosovo question to be in the spirit of responsible multilateralism."
