Six years since Ohrid peace deal

The agreement signed by the late Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski and the leaders of the four key political parties from the Macedonian and ethnic-Albanian camps, foresaw constitutional changes providing greater rights and institutional integration for the ethnic-Albanian minority in the country.

The document was signed and guaranteed by the special representatives of the EU and U.S. Since, its implementation has become a central condition in the country's bid for NATO and EU membership.

In a statement to the MIA news agency on Monday, the U.S. ambassador in Macedonia, Gillian Milovanovic, said, "Macedonia has made big progress from 2001, since the adoption, and in the current implementation of the Ohrid framework agreement."

Vlado Popovski, a law professor and one of the authors of the agreement, says that the main bulk of Ohrid's provisions have already been implemented.

He said that legally the agreement will be fully implemented with the adoption of the law on the use of languages, but practically, he thinks that the agreement is over 70 percent fulfilled.

The armed conflict in Macedonia started on February 2001 when the guerrillas of the so called National Liberation Army (NLA) seized control over the village of Tanushevci near the border with Kosovo.

Over the next few months fighting spread to areas near the northern towns of Kumanovo and Tetovo and close to the capital Skopje.

The conflict ended with several thousands of internally displaced persons and clamed lives of over 60 Macedonian soldiers and policemen. The number of casualties among NLA remains unknown.

Shortly after the conflict ended the leaders of the Albanian guerrilla turned politicians, founding the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), which entered coalition government after the September 2002 elections.
