Telekom Serbia still holds monopoly

However this is not the case with fixed telephony.

Telekom Serbia has 2.7 million subscribers, 290,000 of which are mutliparty lines and 350,000 are still using analog dialing stations.

The Telecommunications Ministry said that there will be a public competition by the end of the year for fixed phone service licenses.

In neighboring Croatia, for example, there have been several operators working in the field for years now successfully.

In Serbia, the deregulation of the market is still in the phase of adopting guidelines and issuing the licenses for building and renting out telecommunication network resources.

Once the telecommunications agency RATEL adopts its guidelines, potential operators will be able to receive licenses for working in this field, said Secretary of State in the Ministry for Telecommunications and Informational Communities, Milenko Cvetinović.

On July 17, the SkyTel Srbija company began working on the market, which should have secured cheaper phone services through its various Internet offers.

However, the ministry said that the company is not licensed yet.

The Serbian market's tardiness in expanding the stationary phone services has hurt the citizens most, who are not able to use the Internet for calling abroad at local prices.
