BELGRADE Former Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Monday that he "never received money" from controversial businessman Stanko Subotic Tadic, who is now honorary president of the Democratic Party (DS), also stated that Subotic did not fund the DS "in any way." Tadic says he never received money from Subotic Tadic stressed he was willing to provide transparent arguments for his claim, and that he would do it in detail before the public and court if summoned to testify. Subotic was brought before the Special Court in Belgrade on Monday and denied accusations of leading a criminal group that smuggled cigarettes during the 1990s, adding that the case against him had been staged so politicians could extort money from him. Tadic said he did not receive any money from Subotic since he became DS president in 2004. Tadic said in a written statement for the media that during his term as Serbian president from 2004 to 2012, Subotic was treated the same as any other citizen in terms of law. "Neither did he fund the party while I led it, nor was he allowed to buy his freedom. It is obvious he sees that as political pressure, and only sees the government that acquits him of all charges as fair," Tadic noted. The former president pointed out that during his two terms as president, he never influenced court proceedings, including the case against Subotic. (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
