Former Republic of Srpska President Radovan Karadzic’s trial continued in the Hague Tribunal on Thursday after three days of postponement due to his illness. Prosecution’s witness forensic pathologist Dr Hamilton Lawrence gave his statement today. Former RS president’s trial continues Karadzic said that he had not recovered completely but that he had come to the courtroom anyway. Lawrence wrote reports about the examination of remains from mass graves that are believed to be connected with Srebrenica, including those from Cancari, Liplje and Kozluk. The court also accepted the statement that Lawrence gave at the trial of Radislav Krstic who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for aiding and supporting the Srebrenica genocide. According to the witness’ statement, his team examined 2, 239 body bags and identified 1,307 gunshot wounds, 44 blindfolds and there was a possibility that there were around 100 of them. He stressed that majority of corpses had been in an advanced stage of decomposition and that it had therefore been very difficult to determine the cause of death, i.e. to determine with certainty what had caused the wounds. Karadzic is accused of genocide in Srebrenica and eight other municipalities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, crimes against humanity and violation of laws and customs of wars from 1992 until 1995.
