In its closing argument at a trial for war crimes in Zvornik in 1992 the War Crimes Prosecution has called on the court to find the three defendants guilty. “Since I have not found circumstances that would rule out criminal responsibility on the defendants’ part, I suggest you find them guilty of war crime,” Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Milan Petrovic said before Belgrade Higher Court's War Crimes Department on Wednesday. Prosecutor's closing argument in Zvornik case He requested from the court to take into account all circumstances during sentencing of each of the defendants, stressing that the way the crimes had been committed and the number of victims were aggravating circumstances. The defendants’ attorneys will give their closing arguments tomorrow. After the closing arguments, trial chamber Chairwoman Tatjana Vukovic will set a date when a verdict will be delivered to Darko Jankovic aka Pufta, Sasa Cilerdzic and Goran Savic. The three men are accused of killing at least 14 civilians after physically and psychologically torturing them in Celopek from May until July 1992 while they were members of the Pivarski volunteer unit. Three members of the Yellow Wasps and Pivarski units were earlier convicted of the crimes in Zvornik – Dragan Slavkovic was sentenced to 13, Ivan Korac to nine and Sinisa Filipovic to three years in prison. Dragutin Dragicevic was acquitted. Due to failure to prevent crimes committed by the paramilitary units, including deportation and torture of prisoners, Zvornik “interim government” leader Branko Grujic was sentenced to six and then Zvornik Territorial Defense Staff Commander Branko Popovic to 15 years in prison in a separate trial.

The defendants’ attorneys will give their closing arguments tomorrow.

After the closing arguments, trial chamber Chairwoman Tatjana Vuković will set a date when a verdict will be delivered to Darko Janković aka Pufta, Saša Ćilerdžić and Goran Savić.
