The Hague Tribunal has turned down Radovan Karadzic’s motion to exclude Judge Melville Baird from Trinidad and Tobago from his trial. The former president of the Republic of Srpska stands accused of genocide and crimes against humanity against Muslims and Croats, as well as of taking international hostages during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1991-1993. Karadzic justifed his motion to exclude Baird on the grounds that, under Trinidad law, he could not be a judge because he was over 65 years of age, which was why he had stepped down from the Supreme Court in Trinidad. The tribunal stressed that, under the Hague rules, age was not a criteria for establishing a judge’s ability to discharge his duties. O-gon Kwon will chair the trial chamber in the trial against Karadzic, together with Baird and Howard Morrison from Great Britain. The stand-by judge will be Flavia Lattanzi. Karadzic was arrested in July, 2008 in Belgrade by the Serbian authorities. Karadžić’s trial is scheduled to begin on October 26.

Karadžić justifed his motion to exclude Baird on the grounds that, under Trinidad law, he could not be a judge because he was over 65 years of age, which was why he had stepped down from the Supreme Court in Trinidad.
