The FBI is investigating three persons suspected of sending threatening letters to three Serbian officials, it has been confirmed. War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic, President Boris Tadic and Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic – who also heads a council coordinating Serbia's cooperation with the Hague Tribunal – all received the letters. FBI probes threats against Serb prosecutor Prosecution spokesman Bruno Vekaric told B92 TV on Saturday that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations representatives recently visited the office headed by Vukcevic, to notify Serbia's state institutions that an investigation was ongoing. "It is coming along, we heard that several persons had been brought in, but only for questioning, and that the basic circle of persons from where the threats are coming has been located," he explained. "This is important because we know where danger can potentially come from and I think it's a huge step toward resolving this case," said Vekaric. Belgrade's daily Blic writes today that the FBI had three U.S. citizens of Serb descent in custody, collecting their fingerprints, in order to compare them with those found on the letters sent to Belgrade. The War Crimes Prosecution says it received 48 such threats so far, mostly in the form of letters, but on several occasions incidents such as tire puncturing on official vehicles were also reported The threats intensified in January this year, the newspaper says. One letter, mailed from the United States, reads that Vukcevic, "a proven traitor of the Serb people, will get what he deserves – a bullet in the forehead". The signature read, "a group of Serbs", and, "the Organization for Protection of Serbs". The threats arrived from several cities stateside, some containing photographs showing details such as Vukcevic's car's license plates.
