The foreign currency inflow from tourism amounted to USD 817mn in the first ten months of 2011, it has been announced in Belgrade. By the end of the year the figure is expected to approach a billion dollars - the record amount reached in 2008, Assistant Minister for Tourism of Serbian Ministry of Economy and Regional Development Renata Pindzo stated on Tuesday. Serbia hopes for billion dollar tourism revenue Compared to the same period in 2010, the foreign currency inflow increased by about 20 percent, Pindzo stressed at the awarding of certificates to tour guides and escorts. According to her, the total number of overnight stays increased by 12 percent, and of arrivals by 14 percent. State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development Goran Petkovic said that tour guides are Serbia's ambassadors who should spread positive images and emotions of Serbia, present its history as well as present, modern trends, but also theaters, universities, and the like. Licenses have been awarded to tour escorts, which is, according to Petkovic, the result of the state's concern for travellers, whether the foreign tourists traveling abroad, or foreigners coming to Serbia. In this way, travelers will be protected even when the services of the tourist guide are not secured, Petkovic said. Certificates were awarded to 218 tour guides of the 17th generation and 209 tour escorts of the first generation, who have successfully passed the required exams within the Ministry.
