Serbia's diaspora has invested USD 550mn in its homeland since 2000, Diaspora Minister Srdjan Sreckovic said Sunday. He added that 193 investment projects had been proposed to encourage continued inflow of money from the diaspora. “Diaspora invested USD 550mn since 2000” "Foreign investments are essential to Serbia's economic development and it is important that in the final year of its term, the government takes advantage of improving relations with the EU and the U.S. not only to accelerate the European integration and get the candidate status, but also to attract more investments," the minister said after laying a wreath at the grave of King Milan Obrenovic (1854-1901) at the Krusedol monastery on Fruska Gora near Novi Sad. "I believe our people in the diaspora will give a much larger contribution to the country's economic development, even through USD 550mn has been invested since 2000 in small and medium-sized companies which employ between 20,000 and 25,000 people," Sreckovic pointed out. “Not counting privatizations, the investments from the diaspora are equal to the total of all other direct foreign investments,” the diaspora minister said and added that in the future the economy would be at the center of government policy, as Serbia could protect its interests and the interests of its people only if its economy was strong.
