Another low for Serbian currency

The domestic currency has fallen to its lowest value in relation to the euro since the European currency was introduced in 2002. One euro is worth RSD 97.42 this Monday. Another low for Serbian currency The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) stated that the euro could reach a value of RSD 100 in the coming days. All this continues to devalue the wages of Serbians and increases the loan installments indexed in foreign currency. The currency slide is also negatively affecting businesses. On the other side, the increase in the value of the euro helps exporters, but there are not many companies that successfully export their products from Serbia. Employers Union President Stevan Avramovic said that citizens and companies “must know by what exchange rate they are taking out loans and paying them”. In addition, this official believes that the volatile rate should promote Serbia to adopt the euro “as the official currency”. Since the beginning of the year, the NBS has sold EUR 37mn in an effort to stop the daily oscillations in the dinar’s value. The highest value of the dinar against the euro in 2009 was recorded on January 5, when one euro was worth EUR 89.54.
