Despite the failure of negotiations between Partizan factory officials and the govt., new talks have been scheduled for Friday, Labor Ministry sources stated. Partizan employees are continuing their hunger strike, despite the government’s promise after the last meeting to look into all possible legal avenues for helping them. Partizan workers continue strike Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic said that the government could not meet the factory workers’ demands because the company was privately owned. However, he said that it was the state’s responsibility to protect its citizens and uphold the legality of the privatization process. Ljajic said that the state would mediate between the workers and the factory’s owners to find a solution. “We’ve received documents with a number of court rulings that the workers have. We will compare these documents with those in the possession of several state institutions—primarily, the Privatization Agency, the Shareholders Fund and other ministries, and we have agreed to continue talks on Friday,” the minister said. “We are doing everything within our legal capabilities, because our realistic room for manoeuvre is not great, but we want to use all possible angles in order to protect the rights of workers on the one hand, and to stop any further radicalization of the strike on the other,” he said. It has been reported that factory owner Jovan Aleksic will be invited to the next meeting on Friday. The new owner claims that when he purchased a majority stake in the company on the stock exchange, he did not buy the factory’s debts as well. Rasim Ljajic (Tanjug, archive)
