Next year will be very difficult and uncertain for the whole world, including Serbia and our agriculture, Minister Sasa Dragin says. Dragin, who is in charge of the agriculture portfolio in the Cvetkovic cabinet, told B92 that his ministry has prepared a development program that, despite a modest budget for 2009, envisages series of measures to help Serbia's farmers. "Ministry will assist farmers" The program will seek to protect domestic production and prevent large systems from buying agricultural produce, and will look to set up local development funds. "In this way, we connect municipal funds with those from the republic. It is definitely much easier for the municipalities to use comparative advantages of their own region and decide where to allocate the money," Dragin said. "These funds will have an annual interest rate of two percent, plus the hard currency clause. During the grace period the interest rate will be at zero percent, and this is very different from the banking loans that are often too much of a burden for farmers, and especially in this economic crisis," the minister continued. "I do not believe that farmers will mortgage their property and take out loans in a year that will be financially very, very uncertain," said Dragin.
