Jelašić announces single-digit inflation

National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Radovan Jelasic says overall inflation would come down by the end of the year. Jelasic also assessed that after the record of 10.5 percent inter-year inflation reached in August, inflation would ease to single digits. Jelasic announces single-digit inflation The central bank chief underlined that inflation would drop if the forthcoming rebalance of the budget did not encourage public spending. He also added that "if we wish for the inflation to continue to decrease in 2009, the budget for next year must to be restrictive, as the Technical Assistance Mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had already recommended". Jelasic said that the NBS had been pointing for the past two years that Serbia needs to come to a new arrangement with the IMF, which would help lower the interest rates of the banks in Serbia.
