President Boris Tadic has yesterday weighed in on the debate on an energy deal with Russia. "We cannot sell NIS for nothing, nor can the company be handed over to any partner for political reasons." Tadic: NIS won't be handed over "Therefore we are negotiating with a potential partner. These negotiations are not simple, but they offer great opportunities," Tadic told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik's holiday issue. "If we finalize these talks successfully, Gazprom could become a strategic partner for NIS. Otherwise, we will have to look for one elsewhere," the president explained. Tadic also said he will back the deal with the Russians if Serbia "really does have guarantees of a stable gas supply in the next 30 years," and if the interest of the Serbian public oil enterprise, its employees, and the country's public finances are all honored. The media in Belgrade has for the past several days speculated that the agreement will be signed on January 18, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
