CAIRO Egypt's public prosecutor has ordered the detention of ousted President Mohamed Morsi for alleged contacts with Hamas, said the state news agency MENA. Morsi has reportedly been in contact with the Palestinian Islamist organization that helped him escape from prison in 2011. This case relates to the escape of tens of leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood from prison during a protest in 2011, when Morsi's predecessor Hosni Mubarak was overthrown. The Egyptian media have speculated that the Muslim Brotherhood organized the escape in cooperation with Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah. The Brotherhood officials say they were helped by the locals, not foreigners. According to the Egyptian agency's report, Morsi is under investigation for allegations that he collaborated with Hamas in attacking police stations, prisons and military officers, setting fire to a prison and allowing prisoners, including himself, to escape, and premeditated murder of police, soldiers and prisoners. The Egyptian army has been holding Morsi at an unknown location since he was ousted from power on July 3. General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi called for a mass demonstration to take place today against what he called the terrorism of the Muslim Brotherhood, which itself called for protests.
