"Serbia is with us in fight against Islamists"

U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby says American and Serbian authorities are "together in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) because it is a common problem."

"Serbia is with us in fight against Islamists"

The agency said the diplomat made the statement at the Red Cross premises in Belgrade on Thursday, where a blood drive was organized in cooperation with the U.S. embassy on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on targets in the U.S.

Kirby also said that in his conversations with Serbian authorities he received assurances that Serbia was "taking measures against the threat of Islamists" and welcomed the action.

"This is a common problem, there are Serbian citizens in that group, and some of our citizens were killed. Serbia is with us in this fight, as Prime Minister Aleksandar Vućić already announced," he said.

Asked if his country had announced strikes against the IS "symbolically on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attack," Kirby said that the jihadist group recently intensified attacks and that no symbolism should sought in the date.
