Citizens of Serbia last year filed 22,500 asylum requests in EU countries - but the visa-free regime is not under threat, says Ivan Gerginov.

22,500 Serbian citizens sought asylum in EU

According to him, their reasons are twofold: bad financial situation and lack of housing, and favorable measures of social welfare in EU countries in terms of financial compensation.

"Abolition of the visa-free regime has not been requested by anyone because of this, but the possibility is always there. The visa-free regime is not threatened at this time and the government has established a commission for the preservation of the visa-free regime that monitors it," he was quoted as saying.

Gerginov then pointed out that when Germany put Serbia on the list of safe countries, the move "drastically reduced the number of asylum applications filed in that country."

"The main motivation for seeking asylum in Germany was social benefits, which are about EUR 1,000," noted this official.

At the same time, this year about 4,500 foreigners sought asylum in Serbia, and, according to Gerginov, about a dozen people received "some form of protection."

The reason for this, he explained, is that these persons see Serbia only as a transit country, and seek asylum solely as a protective measure.

According to reports, more citizens of western Balkan countries than Syrians last year sought asylum in the European Union - 78,000 in all.
