BRUSSELS EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has said that Serbia "has the potential to move towards the EU at an accelerated pace." He stressed that implementation of regulations is the chief challenge in Serbia's EU integration. Serbia "could move towards EU at accelerated pace" "There is no doubt that Serbia has the potential to move towards the EU at an accelerated pace, he said. It is mostly the result of the determination of its leaders in past years to have the country join the EU and of the existing consensus regarding the will to join the EU," he stated. Serbia has already achieved significant progress in meeting many EU standards, he told reporters during the presentation of a guide on the talks concerning chapters 23 and 24, which was held in Belgrade on Tuesday. Past accessions have shown that the main challenge lies in implementing EU regulations, he pointed out, adding that the accession talks with Serbia would last a few years. There is a number of areas which Brussels will pay attention to during the talks - the judiciary, basic rights, justice, freedom, security, agriculture, rural development, environment, climate change and financial control, he listed. Serbia is also expected to be active in regional cooperation and reconciliation and to work towards bring its relations with Kosovo to normal, Fule remarked. The screening (an analysis of legislation) for all the chapters of the accession talks will begin this month and take between 18 and 21 months, he said. According to Fule, the screening will allow the EU to identify the remaining gaps in legislation and implementation and help Serbia adopt the necessary changes. (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
