MOSCOW Russia must protect itself from the threat of extremist violence coming out of Afghanistan, said President Vladimir Putin. At a meeting of his country's Council for Security, the Russian leader said forces led by the U.S. and NATO "have not yet achieved a breakthrough in the fight against terrorist and radical groups" in Afghanistan, and that these groups are becoming more active, Reuters reported. Putin highlights "threats from Afghanistan" "We need to strengthen our security system in the strategically important area in the south of the country, including a military component," Putin said, adding that Russia must cooperate with members of two regional security alliances, one of which includes China. Russia, which has supported the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 expressed concern that threats to its security could be increased after the planned withdrawal of most foreign combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Putin also said that international forces have not done enough to combat drug production in Afghanistan, and that they ignored Russia's appeals for a more concerted effort to destroy the poppy fields that are used to produce heroin. Putin stated that Russia, which is geographically separated from Afghanistan by the former Soviet states of Central Asia, should increase the control of migration on its southern border, but did not provide many details about how to increase the security of the country.
