Epiphany marked in towns across Serbia

The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) today traditionally marks Epiphany with competitions to recover the Holy Cross from rivers and lakes.

BELGRADE The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) today traditionally marks Epiphany with competitions to recover the Holy Cross from rivers and lakes. Velimir Vukojevic of Belgrade was the first to reach the Holly Cross at Belgrade’s Ada Ciganlija lake. Around 60 participants, including members of the Serbian Army (VS), Gendarmerie and Svibor martial art association took part in the race. Epiphany marked in towns across Serbia The cross was made of ice and weighed between 10 and 15 kilograms. The water temperature was 3.6 and air temperature was zero degrees Celsius. Aside from Ada Ciganlija, the competition was held at another three locations in Belgrade. 200 swimmers from Serbia, Russia, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania will take part in a race to recover the cross from the Danube River in the Belgrade’s neighborhood of Zemun.
