Councilors from ethnic Albanian parties in Bujanovac, southern Serbia, have adopted a proposal to change the names of several local streets. Using the fact they had four members over three Serbs in a municipal committee that made the decision, the ethnic Albanians decided to rename 17 streets currently named after Serbian historical, cultural, and scientific figures. They will be replaced by Albanian "authors, and fighters for Albanian awakening", it was said. The list includes Skenderbeg, Redzep Hasani, Lam Breznica, Naim and Sami Fraseri and Idriz Sefer. Among them is Fatmir Ibisi of Gnjilane, who in February 2000 - as a member of a terrorist group - attacked a Serbian police vehicle, killing one officer and seriously wounding three others. The Serb councilors left the meeting of the committee in protest, saying the results of the voting represented "a defeat of the multi-ethnic policy and start of new tensions in already volatile inter-ethnic relations". "From this day on nothing is the same in Bujanovac. The coalition no longer exists," said Stojanca Arsic, deputy municipal president. The Ministry for State Governance, Local Self-Administration and Human and Minority Rights will have the last word on the decision made by the ethnic Albanian councilors.
