Strong winds and high waves have hit Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, prompting authorities to cancel flights and ferry services, close roads, and order evacuations in parts of the city.

Officials declared a state of emergency in parts of Wellington after the meteorological service warned of waves up to nine meters along the city’s southern coast, urging residents in affected areas to leave their homes, Reuters reported. At Wellington Airport, a strong gust of wind briefly overturned a small aircraft, but no one was injured in the incident. According to local media, the accident occurred after landing and passenger disembarkation.

Due to adverse weather conditions, around eight flights have been cancelled, while national airline Air New Zealand has warned passengers of possible further disruptions and offered rebooking options.

Ferry services between New Zealand’s North and South Islands have also been suspended. Meteorologists warn that waves are expected to continue rising during the day along the eastern coasts of both islands, as well as around the Chatham Islands.

Tourist and fishing activities in the Cook Strait area have also been cancelled due to the storm, with local operators stating that sea conditions are too dangerous for navigation.
