Chief of the Serbian Army (VS) General Staff Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic on Thursday officially took over from Gen. Miloje Miletic. The previous army chief, who retired from active service, handed the office over to his successor in a ceremony held at the House of the Guard in Belgrade. New VS chief of general staff assumes office Serbian defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac and the army's top ranked officials attended the ceremony. Sutanovac thanked Miletic for all he had done while in office, and underlined that they agreed that the army had to go forward, and that “without its modernization, Serbia cannot progress.” The minister stressed that the reforms in the system of defense will be continued, adding that “the reforms in the military cannot be slowed down, as that will lead to a slowdown in reforms carried out in the entire country and society.” Dikovic said that a great honor was bestowed on him, and that during his service, he will, together with all members of the Serbian military, invest efforts into upgrading capacities and competencies of the Serbian Armed Forces, thereby strengthening Serbia's security. “I would like to thank the Serbian president who upon the recommendation by the minister of defense and the chief of the general staff placed his trust in me for this honorable duty,” Dikovic said. Miletic recalled that for his three years in office, the Serbian Armed Forces and the defense Ministry did a great job on upgrading and modernizing the military and thus ensured a greater security. Miletic stressed that the "professionalization "of the army - i.e., abolishment of complusory military service - was "certainly the most significant part of the reform process". In this way, the Serbian Army joined the modern armies capable of responding to the security challenges of today, he added. Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic (Tanjug)
