Ten days into the implementation of Serbia's new Road Traffic Safety Law, the number of deaths from traffic accident is dramatically lower. This is according to Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic, who told state broadcaster RTS late on Sunday that the figure was "two times lower compared to the same period in 2010". The new law came into force on December 10 and it proscribes harsher penalties with the aim of reducing the number of people killed in traffic accidents in Serbia in the following three years "by half". According to Serbian police (MUP) data, 756 people were killed in traffic accidents in 11 months in 2009, whereas in 2008, 897 persons lost their lives in car crashes.
