The War Crimes Prosecution has filed an application to launch an investigation against Izet Smajic on suspicion of perpetrating war crimes. The motion has been submitted to the War Crimes Chamber of Belgrade’s District Court. New charges in Tuzla Column case? Smajic, a Bosnian national, is charged with committing war crimes against the wounded and prisoners of war in clashes with the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) on May 15, 1992 in Tuzla, as a member of a Bosniak armed formation. The prosecution states that immediately after the attack on the JNA column that was leaving the Husinjska Buna barracks in Tuzla, Smajic, having seen that there were still some survivors among the dead soldiers, went up to Radovan Krstic, put a gun in his mouth and fired. Remarkably, Krstic, from Bijeljina, survived, and later received medical attention from staff at the Tuzla Medical Center. He was operated on there, and after making a recovery, was sent to Tuzla prison, where he remained until he was exchanged in July 1992. Krstic testified on March 28 in the trial of Ilija Jurisic, indicted in the Tuzla Column case before the Belgrade District Court War Crimes Chamber. The Tuzla High Court launched an investigation against Smajic in 1992. A year ago this case, with all the evidence regarding the perpetrator, the event and the victim, was sent to the Bosnia-Herzegovina Prosecution. However, since the Bosnian courts have yet to address the matter, the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution has launched an investigation and called for Smajic to be taken into custody.
