Russia welcomed the govt’s decision to scrap visa requirements for her citizens and will consider a reciprocal move. President of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Policy Committee Konstantin Kosachov thinks that, given the relations between the two countries, Moscow should “most seriously consider the possibility” of taking similar decisions for Serbian citizens. “Russia to consider scrapping visa regime” Press agency RIA Novosti, citing a source within the Russian Interior Ministry, stated that Russia warmly welcomed Belgrade’s decision which would “without any doubt contribute to strengthening relations with our friends in Serbia.” The source said that decision “will have a positive influence on contacts between citizens of the two countries.” Talking to Interfaks, Kosachov welcomed the government’s decision, adding that given the specific nature of relations between the two countries “that decision had to be taken sooner or later.” He said that by abolishing the visa regime, Serbia had “clearly confirmed that it considers Russia its most important partner and ally, an ally with whom it can and must develop close relations in all spheres.” Kosachov said that all layers of Russian society would benefit from the move—businessmen, scientists, students and workers in the cultural field. “In short, all people involved in cooperation projects that Serbia expects at this complex time following the violent and illegal secession of Kosovo,” he explained. “Russia should very seriously consider the possibility of taking a similar decision towards the citizens of Serbia,” underlined the Russian deputy.
