World news agencies are focusing on the Serbian presidential election in their reports today. Reports state that an ultra-nationalist candidate won the vote, and that he will fight it out with the pro-Western incumbent in the second round, who won the previous presidential elections in a similar run-off. Media: Election results not surprising International media also state that the elections will have a direct effect on Serbia’s relations with the West and that it could ruin Serbia’s chances of a European future. The media links Serb Radical Party candidate Tomislav Nikolic with ultra-nationalism and the politics of Slobodan Milosevic, while Democratic Party candidate Boris Tadic is said to be pro-Western and pro-European. CNN commented that the result of the elections would decide whether Serbia headed towards the EU, as Tadic would like, or “embrace nationalism, which Nikolic favors - which has not been seen since the ethnic conflicts of the 90s.” The main differences between Tadic and Nikolic presented by the world media are tied to their proposed responses to a Kosovo declaration of independence. Their positions towards the EU are another major factor, though most news agencies feel that Nikolic has softened his stance and rhetoric towards Serbian EU membership. The BBC stated that Nikolic was expected to say “no” to Serbian humiliation where Kosovo and the EU were concerned, and that, even though his stance towards the Union had softened, he, like many other Serbs, felt that Serbia could not afford to suffer any further indignities. Tadic would push for a European perspective, but he must not soften his stance on Kosovo. Few were surprised by the outcome of the first round of elections, but were taken aback by the large turnout. It was also stated that the outcome of the second round would depend on who the other seven candidates lent their support to in the run-off.
