However, touching on the issue of Kosovo and Martti Ahtisaari’s plan for the future status of the province, the two did not share the same position.
As for Serbia’s EU integration, Tadić said he was convinced that Serbia had administrative, economic and legal capacities to finalize and sign the agreement by year’s end, pledging that the country would "give its best" to meet necessary conditions and achieve full cooperation with the Hague by that time.

Barroso called on Serbia to bring the cooperation with the Hague to an end.

Tadić and Barroso also agreed that Kosovo’s status quo was not sustainable, offering diverging views on how to settle the issue.

The head of the European Commission reiterated EU’s support for Ahtisaari’s plan as a basis for new Kosovo resolution, while Tadić stressed that Serbia did not back the plan.

“Serbia can never approve of Kosovo’s independence… it might set a dangerous precedent for the entire world,” Tadić argued in Brussels.

"We are not linking - I want to make it clear - we are not linking the [ongoing] Stabilization and Association Agreement negotiations with Kosovo," Barroso said.

"But when we think about strategic relations between Serbia and Europe, of course, if this issue is not solved, it will create a lot of problems. This is obvious. We will not be able to achieve what is, I think, our strategic goal, [which] is to have, one day, Serbia as a full member of the European Union."

The EU restarted Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) discussions with Serbia in June after over a year of inactivity after Belgrade's cooperation with the Hague Tribunal was assessed as insufficient.
