Accompanied by several of his cabinet members, and the Republic of Srpska prime minister Milorad Dodik, Koštunica described the festival as proof of courage and high spirits both in good and bad times. “Those who cannot love and understand Guča, cannot love or understand Serbia. The festival started 46 years ago, and in a good, in a healthy way, Guča grew and crossed the borders. It became a national brand, our valuable asset, that we can take to the world”, Koštunica said.

Velimir Ilić said had Ahtisaari come to Guča, he would have been able to see and feel the true Serbia. “If Ahtisaari were here, his opinion on Serbs would be different. Serbia is not rattling sabers, Serbia is having fun, celebrating, working and bringing in foreign investors, such as Telenor”, Ilić said.

The Serbian PM also said that Serbia should not enter the EU without bringing along its recognizable traits, such as Guča. “I will remind you of Matija Bećković’s words, spoken four years ago in Guča: ‘If we entered the EU without our melodies and colors, our name and memory, they would not know who we are nor what we bring with us’. Guča is one of the signs of our identity and strength, a sign of our confidence”, Koštunica concluded.
