"Sanctions have not helped anyone. Russia is not our problem. Our main problem is what is going to happen to the EU," Fico told TA3 TV, according to TASS.

He said his country's foreign policy is based on two things: first, EU membership and second, NATO membership.

"One the other hand, we sometimes have a need to fight for our national interests in Brussels," he said, noting that these interests include "lifting sanctions against Russia and opposing the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project."
