BELGRADE Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS) Deputy President Dragan Janjic has condemned mild sentences for hooligans who threatened a B92 reporter. He told B92 that probation sentences that six Partizan fans got for making threats against B92 reporter Brankica Stankovic seemed like an appropriate sentence for a petty theft. NUNS: State treats media as tool “It seems to me like a sentence for a petty theft. The message is simply unbelievable because it is clear that they are violent and potentially dangerous people that even police back off in front of them. The message also represents a direct influence on the media that they should not report certain things,” Janjic explained. He believes that the court had not paid attention to possible danger not only to Stankovic but to the entire society. The NUNS deputy president pointed out that the B92 reporter and author of Insajder (Insider) investigative program had had police protection for the previous three years, adding that he did not understand why the court had not taken the fact into account. “We have a very complex situation and a very strange decision. Also, we still do not know who killed journalists in Serbia, although there is a realistic suspicion that it was the state,” Janjic pointed out. “The judiciary is inefficient and it can make any decision it wants. The authorities, including the judicial ones, need to send clear messages when it comes to protection of freedom of speech,” he said. According to him, the state is trying to treat the media as a tool. The six hooligans chanted "You are dangerous snake and will end up like Curuvija" (a murdered Serbian journalist) during a football game on December 16, 2009 and therefore jeopardized Stankovic’s safety.
