The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and Queeria Center for Promotion of Culture and Non-Violence have started gathering signatures in support the Pride Parade. Their goal, they told a news conference in Belgrade on Friday, was to gather 10,000 signatures. Gay activists gather signatures in support of parade GSA Acting President Lazar Pavlovic says that his organization contacted numerous public figures who are expected to support the event. He told reporters that GSA’s goal was to have this year’s Pride Parade supported by 10,000 citizens of Belgrade. “Representatives of most political parties, during meetings with the Gay-Straight Alliance, already gave their support the parade in the capital,” Pavlovic said and repeated that Serbian President Boris Tadic had also given his unambiguous support. Queeria President Boban Stojanovic stated that "sexual minorities’ rights in democratic societies were exercised last", and that a gay parade would confirm that there had been significant progress in these rights Serbia. Chairman of the Amsterdam Pride Parade Frank van Dalen, who also spoke at the news conference, said that the permits from city authorities and financial investments were necessary for the event to be held in Belgrade, as well as cooperation with police, in order to provide safety for all participants, and added that backing coming from the citizens was also important. LGBT activists did not mention a date or a place where the Pride Parade would be held. The parade which was scheduled for September 20, 2009, was not held because police announced that they could not guarantee safety of participants at the location where they wished to gather.
