Swine flu patients in serious condition
30 October 2009 | 14:35 -> 19:32 | Source: B92
KRAGUJEVAC, BELGRADE -- A 23-year-old woman from Kragujevac suffering from swine flu is in a serious condition and has been put on a breathing machine.

A man in his forties in Požega, western Serbia, is receiving the same medical treatment after his condition from the swine flu infection deteriorated, reports said.

A boy hospitalized in Belgrade yesterday, meanwhile, is feeling better.

The Kragujevac Emergency Center Director Dr. Drakče Radovanović said that the woman's condition is very difficult.

“The patient has been on a ventilator since late last night,” he said, and added that she had developed pneumonia.

The doctor explained that the patient was receiving intensive therapy "and reanimation", and that a medical team made up of specialists was looking after her.

When asked if the woman's life was in danger Radovanović said that "life of any patient hooked to a ventilator is in danger".

In Belgrade, the boy infected with swine flue has been hospitalized at the Mother and Child Institute in Belgrade and is feeling better today, Director Dragutin Tričković told B92.

He said that the patient responded well to treatment, that he no longer had fever and that his recovery was expected soon.

Yesterday, a number of elementary and high schools reported swine flu cases among their students. Over 130 people have been infected with the disease in Serbia so far, while one person has died.

In Kraljevo, centeral Serbia, an epidemic of the disease was declared on Friday, after five school children and several hundred adults were diagnosed with having the virus.
