Nezavisnost Union officials say that unions could organize protests throughout Serbia over the government’s failure to implement the Collective Agreement. Union leader Branislav Canak told B92 that union officials had agreed to form a working group to decide on what moves to take next following the government and employers’ union’s decision to postpone implementation of the Collective Agreement signed with unions last year. Unions threaten large-scale protests The Association of Independence Unions of Serbia and Nezavisnost will hold a joint press conference on Thursday to unveil their protest plans, Canak said. “We have decided to form a joint working group made up of ten members that will first create a strategy for our resistance to the flouting of the Collective Agreement, and will propose different forms of protest, from those involving strikes and work stoppages, to those that will involve street protests. We will not back down,” he warned. He said that protests would be organized all over Serbia and it would then be seen “who can hold out longest.” Canak said that the unions would continue to negotiate with the government and employers’ unions, but would not negotiate a freezing of the Collective Agreement. “It is all about timing, we can even talk tonight if anyone wants to, but we will talk after the protests for sure—the government will have no choice,” the strike leader said. He said that he had received no information that the Collective Agreement had ceased to be valid, stating that he had heard this from the media but that “agreements are not signed or terminated through the media.” The agreement was signed by Labor and Social Policies Minister Rasim Ljajic and can only be terminated with a signature from a government minister, Canak explained.
