Applications for new biometric passports may be submitted from Monday, July 7. Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic says that long queues will be inevitable. Biometric passports from Monday Djelic said that the procedure is due to start at Serbian consular departments overseas on October 1. The new passports will cost RSD 2,170 (around EUR 25) in Serbia, while Serbian citizens that apply abroad will pay an additional tax of EUR 15. Passports will be delivered within 30 days of applications being submitted. Even though issuing of new passports had been due to begin on June 23, Djelic said that applications would begin on July 7. Officials warn of long queues at counters, but they promise to increase capacities where necessary, while the minister says that he will personally be checking the situation on the field. Interior Ministry representatives say that the reason for the long waiting periods is the need to conduct thorough checks of information submitted in applications. Applications for new biometric documents can be submitted regardless of the place of residency.
