Greece postpones Macedonia's EU negotiations

The European Union has postponed the beginning of membership negotiations for membership with Macedonia. It came due to Greece’s stance against the negotiations. Greece postpones Macedonia's EU negotiations The question will be evaluated once again next year by the Spanish EU presidency. “The Council noted that the Commission recommends the opening of negotiations for membership with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and that it will go back to this question during the next presidency,” the EU ministers stated in Brussels on Tuesday. Macedonia hopes that EU leaders would pick a date for their negotiations to begin at the December 10 summit in Brussels, after the European Commission recommended such a move in October. The EU foreign ministers, who are meeting on Tuesday in preparation for the summit, decided that because of the insistence of Greece, they should postpone this question, the Reuters agency reported. Greece opposes Macedonia joining the EU because of the dispute over its name, which Athens believes infringes on its sovereignty. For the same reason, Greece blocked Macedonia’s entrance into NATO at a summit in 2008. One European diplomat said that Athens will not back off on the blockade of Macedonia’s negotiations until the presidential elections in Greece, scheduled for March. Greece was the only EU member-state against starting negotiations with Macedonia, according to EU sources.
