Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić and U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby discussed U.S. investments and topics important for the stability of the region Wednesday.

BELGRADE Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby discussed U.S. investments and topics important for the stability of the region Wednesday. Nikolic said to Kirby that even though Serbia was committed to establishing stability in Southeast Europe certain politicians in the region believed that they could make themselves look more important in the eyes of the West, pointing to Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic. Speaking about the last week's meeting between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci in the presence of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, the Serbian president underscored that the meeting represented the beginning of a new stage in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, and called for wide support of the international community so that the talks could bring about some progress in the establishment of lasting stability in the region. Kirby welcomed the progress made in the talks with Pristina and promised that the U.S. would help to make the talks even more constructive. At the same time, he commended the government on the efforts it invested in setting up stability of institutions in Serbia, primarily those in the fight against corruption. The U.S. ambassador underscored that Serbia needed all these efforts so as to create a favorable climate for attracting foreign investors, which was an important condition for the development of local economy. Kirby pointed out that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would visit Serbia next week. Nikolic thanked the U.S. ambassador on inviting Microsoft on Tuesday to invest in Serbia which sends a clear signal to other foreign investors concerning the benefits of investing in the Serbian market, the president's press office released.
