Ethnic Albanian MP Riza Halimi said that the closing of courts in Presevo and Bujanovac endangers the rights of local Albanians. It relates to this community’s right to have courts in their language, he explained. Ethnic Albanian officials upset over courts This “gives radical groups an argument why not to cooperate with bodies of the Serbian state,” Halimi said on Tuesday. After the courts in Presevo and Bujanovac were closed, resident of these places will have to travel up to 120 kilometers to Vranje over everyday issues, which also means great expenses, Halimi said. People who were let go in Vranje and Bujanovac are now coming to Presevo to work instead of those who were made redundant here, Halimi also said. An employee of the notary office who spoke both Serbia and Albanian and had a community college degree was sacked, this politician continued, while another, a Serb, was hired instead – “who only finished high school and whose [previous]job still active”. Presevo Municipal President Ragmi Mustafa said that the shutting down of the courts and prosecution offices in Presevo and Bujanovac was a reason for “serious concern among citizens”. He said that a bilingual institution was closed and that it was not taken into account that Presevo was a border area municipality, “on the border with Kosovo and Macedonia”. “There is a great transit of people here and there are many more cases than in other municipal courts,” he said. “How will these cases be taken care of in a normal amount of time in the Vranje courts where the number of judges has decreased and the amount of work has increased?” Mustafa asked. He added that the municipality for this reason asked for basic prosecutions and municipal courts for Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja in Presevo. Presevo attorney Naser Arifi, a former prosecutor, said that the courts have not been working for several days now. “Citizens will have to confirm from Presevo that they are traveling to Vranje. Is that a way to move the courts closer to the citizens and increase their efficiency?” he wondered.
