Vojislav Kostunica says recognizing Kosovo could be made into a condition for Serbia to join the European Union. "Many EU officials' statement are speaking to that effect. Therefore this issue should've been made clear at the very beginning of the European integrations," he told Beta in an interview on Saturday. Kostunica favors lawsuits over Kosovo The leader of the DSS and former prime minister also believes that direct lawsuits against some of the countries that have recognized Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence would have been better than the current ICJ initiative. Serbia will ask the UN General Assembly to back a resolution to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its non-binding opinion on the declaration. "It is clear that for Serbia the proclamation of Kosovo's independence is illegal and unacceptable. Why then ask this question at all," Kostunica wondered. According to him, the current government showed no clear position on the EULEX mission in its draft Kosovo resolution sent to parliament. Since this EU mission stems from the Ahtisaari plan, it is unacceptable for the DSS, he explained. "Saying that EULEX cannot be in Kosovo without the UN Security Council's decision is a kind of an alibi. The EU mission's task is to form Kosovo's state institutions. How then could such a mission be acceptable to Serbia, even if approved by the Security Council," Kostunica concluded.
