Some 150 KPS Serb policemen have been suspended for 48 hours for refusing to continue working under that body’s command. Following an unsuccessful two-hour meeting with UNMIK police representatives at Gracanica police station, the delegation of Serb police officers informed their colleagues that their demands had not been accepted. A group of five officers returned their weapons, radio receivers and badges to UNMIK, while others are expected to follow suit. KPS Serb officers suspended for 48 hours During the meeting, ethnic Albanian Kosovo Police Service (KPS) members who were securing the police station were joined by a KPS inspection unit in full gear, wearing bullet-proof vests. An armed transporter was parked outside the building, as were two vehicles belonging to KFOR’s Swedish contingent, while ten KPS vehicles and fully equipped UNMIK police controlled traffic at the entrance to Gracanica coming from the direction of Pristina. KPS spokesman Veton Elshani confirmed to Beta that Serb police officers in Gracanica had had an unsuccessful meeting with UNMIK, after which they had been suspended. Elshani added that the suspensions would remain in force until further notice, after which the situation would be reviewed and further steps taken. The Serb police officers from stations in Pristina, Gracanica, Lipljan, Kosovo Polje and Obilic yesterday refused to continue working under the KPS’s command, requesting to work in future under the sole command of the international police. ‘We don’t want to be police officers of the independent state of Kosovo, rather we wish to work according to UN Security Council Resolution 1244,” the Serb officers told Beta. Following the failure of today’s talks and the suspensions, representatives from Gracanica and neighboring Serb villages have asked KFOR’s Irish contingent to assume responsibility for the protection of Serbs.
