Olli Rehn says the EU is ready to send a civilian mission to Kosovo and to assume responsibility for the situation there. In an interview for the Monday edition of the Podgorica magazine CG Ekonomist, the European enlargement commissioner said that resolving Kosovo’s status had be completed through a coordinated and carefully managed process led by the EU. Rehn: EU ready to assume responsibility “The EU is ready to take on responsibility for the situation in Kosovo and it remains dedicated to resolving this issue, and taking the main role in implementing the solution within the framework of a clear European future for the entire region,” Rehn said. “By sending the mission, we’re prepared to assume part of the responsibility in the area of the rule of the law, and contribute to the civil mission in Kosovo,” added the European commissioner. He said that “the future of Kosovo and the west Balkans as a whole is in the EU,” adding that “the EC continues to support the region’s European future.” Rehn discounted the possibility of “a syndrome of little countries in the Balkans” developing after Kosovo’s potential declaration of independence, as many analysts have predicted, stating that, “Europe’s activities are such that there is no room for that sort of process to appear.” “Democratic institutions based on the rule of law and the functioning of the market economy are the key to the development of the west Balkans,” said the European commissioner. He added that, “the European Commission works closely with its partners in the region to reach the desired results, and believes that all the countries in the region will remain set on seeing this challenging process through, where there is no room for ‘syndromes’ of any kind.” Olli Rehn (Fonet)
