Vojvodina Hungarians back dual citizenship

Hungary will implement the Schengen visa regime for Serbian citizens starting January 2008, according to EU regulations.

Leader of the League of Vojvodina Hungarians Ištvan Pastor told daily Građanski list that Solyom's initiative is “very important” for the ethnic Hungarians in the northern Serbian province.

However, political analyst Alpar Lošonc said that while the move for dual citizenship would be good for the Hungarian population in Vojvodina, he reminded that Solyom does not have the constitutional authority to decide on the question.

A referendum on the issue was held in Hungary in 2004 when voters failed to accept the proposal to grant fellow Hungarians in neighboring countries dual citizenships.
