Koštunica off to Washington

Koštunica was invited to Washington by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and is also scheduled to meet with US Vice President Dick Cheney. It is still not certain whether Koštunica will be meeting with President George W. Bush.

Goran Svilanović of the Pact for Stability in Southeast Europe reminded that Koštunica’s visit to the US comes after visiting all the Contact Group member countries. Svilanović said that this is very useful diplomatic activity on Koštunica’s part.

“I would like for him to meet with Bush as well, that would be very good and I think that this is very important for Serbia at this moment. As far as I know, he will be discussing several topics, one is Serbia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, the other, which will be a central theme, will be bilateral relations between America and Serbia, and the third topic is the most important one for us, and will dominate, and it is Kosovo, and the future of Serbia once the status of Kosovo is resolved.” Svilanović said.

Svilanović remains hopeful that Koštunica and Bush will meet, even though he was invited by Rice and not the US President personally.

“Even if they do not meet, we should not consider it to be tragic, but I expect that the meeting will happen. As far as I know, only Đinđić has ever gotten to meet with Bush, and Koštunica during his first visit in 2001. Those are the only two of our officials that have met with Bush. I think that a direct discussion with the US President would be very meaningful, but there needs over-dramatisation of the situation if this meeting does not occur.” Svilanović said.

Koštunica is also expected to speak at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday, at a meeting that will be dedicated to the Kosovo status question. This meeting is expected to mark the first time that an official of the Kosovo temporary institutions will be speaking before the UN as well, according to Priština media.
