Vojislav Seselj has filed a request for termination of proceedings against him at the Hague Tribunal, said reports. Seselj said he based the request on to flagrant violation of his right to a trial within a reasonable period of time. Seselj files request for end to Hague trial The leader of the opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS) noted that he filed the request in the context of abuse of proceedings. He surrendered to the Hague in February 2003, and has been kept in the Hague detention units ever since, while the trial against him started in November 2007. Assessing that his detention period certainly exceeds all records, Seselj noted that not only did the Hague fail to adopt a first-degree verdict in his case, but the trial against him has not been completed either. Recalling that the book of regulations for the Hague procedures contains the principle of expediency of proceedings, Seselj said that there might be a secret reason which has nothing to do with the law, public interest or presumption of innocence. The Hague charged Seselj with persecutions on political, racial and religious basis, deportation, inhumane acts, murder, torture, cruel treatment, reckless destruction of villages, as well as destruction and despoliation of public and private property in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Vojvodina. On three separate occasions, Seselj was charged with contempt of court for publishing data on protected witnesses. In the first instance, he was sentenced to 15 months of prison while the other two proceedings are still underway. Vojislav Seselj (file)
