It is still unknown who will be Ratko Mladic’s defense attorney before the Hague Tribunal and whether he will defend himself. Attorney Tomislav Visnjic, who has represented several indictees before the Hague Tribunal, says that there have been several cases in which the indictees defended themselves, such as Slobodan Milosevic, Vojislav Seselj and Zdravko Tolimir but he does not believe that Mladic will make such a decision. Mladic’s defense counsel still unknown Visnjic told B92 that the main question was whether Mladic was fit to stand trial since his family and lawyer insisted that he was very sick. “They have expressed concern about his health, which could finally result in his unfitness to stand trial, to follow the trial or in his hampered ability to follow the trial,“ he explained and added that there were several options in that case. “Then, options are to suspend the proceeding until his condition improves or to decide that he is comletely fit to stand the trial or to actively participate in it. And the phases between, that his capability is limited, that a period during the day or some longer period of time is limited so it would not jeopardize his condition,“ Visnjic pointed out. He believes that that the idea to put Radovan Karadzic and Mladic on trial together is realistic for two reasons. “One is to make the trial economical and on the other hand, I think that it would even make it easier for those two, the remaining proceeding to Radovan Karadzic and the entire proceeding to Mladic, because they would have more room to work that way, they will be able to share most of the work somehow and therefore make the trial more efficient,” he concluded. Mladic, who was arrested on May 26 in Serbia, was extradited to The Hague on Tuesday night. Ratko Mladic
