Austria's customs service have detained a foreign diplomat accredited to Serbia and his driver for cigarette smuggling. They are suspected of smuggling more than 25,000 cartons of cigarettes worth about EUR 1mn in the past two years, Austrian media have reported. Diplomat smuggled cigarettes from Kosovo The cigarettes were seized by the customs in Graz in cooperation with their colleagues from Linz. According to their statements, the diplomat accredited to Serbia was in charge of the smuggling. The diplomat and the driver, whose nationality has not been made public yet, were using official vehicles of their embassy in Belgrade to smuggle cigarettes from Kosovo into Austria under diplomatic protection. Austrian OFR television reported that police had tracked down the smuggling ring in the beginning of 2009. The two suspected smugglers were taken to custody in Graz upon the arrest. They confessed to illigally bringing five million cigarettes worth about EUR 1mn into Austria in the past two years. Austrian daily Kleine Zeitung writes that the entire operation was organized "for the benefit of a Serbian gang in Austria".
